Conversation

I had a crisis of faith a couple of weeks ago. I was having a casual conversation with a fellow writer and I had the pleasure of learning that as a writer, I was severely inadequate. This person was younger than me and was expounding the fact that regardless of the genre or purpose of your writing. You should be equally proficient enough at all of them.
There’s a lot to unpack there. I don’t think the person was talking out of ignorance or maliciousness but I do think there’s a deeper societal issue here that I will not be going into here. But I will say that it’s easy to feel both frustrated and a desire to defend your own legitimacy as a writer living somewhere where you’re not as valued as others and I sympathize with my fellow writer.
Editor's Note: Unfortunately, sometimes I don't get to finish writing within my allotted time and I think it's good that I still publish it. Both to own up to my failing and also to say, let's keep moving and not dwell on it. I might revisit the topic in the future.
